Chapter 25

Lily

T he lift opened, Seb walked to me and stopped when he noticed I’d halted with one foot inside the lift, and my arms holding the doors. He smiled in only the way he did. Had he not threatened to tell Amanda my secret? Now, he was about to give me his terms for his silence.

Yes is the answer. Silence is mine.

The note dawned on me, but silence was what I got from him, in return for something I was about to find out. Otherwise, one chat over a quick lunch and my secret was no longer silent, but not just my secret, Ben’s, too.

As he had plainly proven how easy it would be.

‘Come out of the lift.’ His lips pursed into a tight line.

‘What do you want, Seb?’ I asked, my chest heaved from heavy breathing, but I needed to stay cool and professional. Not let my guard down and certainly not let him play with me. I needed to approach this like a game of poker, watch for his weaknesses and mishaps. Hopefully, somehow I could pull this back.

‘Why didn’t you call me?’ He made strides toward me.

I narrowed my eyes at his quick movement. I jumped out of the lift. ‘I’m out.’ Shaking my head. ‘I don’t understand.’

‘When I sent you the earrings? The earrings I was touching in your apartment when you broke up with Ben.’

I closed my eyes and sighed at the thought. He helped me sleep when I was tired after driving back from Oxford. He’d insisted I rested my head for thirty minutes and put a cushion on his lap. Stroking my hair and shit, I let him. I’d forgotten about the earrings’ comment. He’d try to make a conversation about them, and I’d brushed him off before I fell asleep on his lap.

‘Do you know how nice that night was for me?’ It was as though he read my mind. Now he thought it meant more than it did. ‘I consoled you.’

‘I was crying because of the note… because of you,’ I hissed.

‘I cuddled you for hours, it meant…’ He blinked and looked away for a beat. ‘And the next morning I woke up, and you weren’t there.’

‘Seb…’ I paused, not sure what else to say because it seemed this was a conversation he was only with happy with hearing what he chose. ‘I don’t know what you think is happening here. Maybe if I’d received your phone number, who knows? I might have called. But I only remember a message saying I was clever enough to work the sender out.’ I shrugged my shoulders. ‘Obviously, I wasn’t.’

I watched his face the whole time I said the words, hoping for a glimmer of optimism, which meant he accepted what I said. Concerned, Seb thought he had lost something, but he needed to know I’d never been his to lose.

‘Such. Exquisite. Beauty,’ he drawled. ‘I told you my name. You didn’t want to see it.’

‘Oh.’ I closed my eyes, recalling the phrase on each of the items I’d received.
